Knitting for good : a guide to creating personal, social & political change, stitch by stitch

I find that crafty and thrifty types are often engaged politically and are passionate about any number of issues. Craftivism lets you use the skills you would for various home decor projects — sewing, knitting, embroidery, cross stitch, etc. Some of her suggestions are to volunteer to build homes with Habitat for Humanity, to start a compost pile and to join a group such as the Church of Craft. My version of craftivism is to donate everything I can to a thrift store so someone else can use it, and to knit. Its therapeutic nature made the process transformative for me, which is one of the intrinsic benefits of craftivism, it helps you in the very process.

With this in mind, I propose that we at Thrifty Flair decide on a craftivist project and get to work. As you create, share your ideas on our Facebook page and tell us about the experience of sharing your crafty talents. We thrifty and crafty and activist types need to inspire each other.

When we are able to sink into the safety of our knitting and clear our minds, we can turn our focus to our breathing, deepening our experience. When we knit, we place our attention over and over again on the natural rhythm of creating fabric from yarn—insert needle, wrap yarn, pull through a new stitch, repeat.

Fler böcker av Betsy Greer

Following this simple repetitive action is the basis of contemplative practice. It continually reminds us to stay focused, to stay in the moment. When we knit with this attention, we have an almost indescribable feeling of satisfaction and contentment. This is knitting as meditation. Sit down with your knitting and strive to knit and meditate for a certain length of time. Once that time has lapsed, cut the yarn, and rip out the work you just did. This way, the next time you want to do a knitting meditation, you can knit until the yarn runs out, marking the allotted time you wanted to meditate.

In all our rushing around, we often forget that giving our minds a few minutes off can put a fresher and brighter perspective on things. The hardest part is remembering that we deserve a few calm moments. But where do we find them?

Even though I kept running around from one thing to the next every day, I decided to start taking my knitting with me everywhere as an experiment. On the days when I felt like I had no time to myself, the very act of getting out my knitting was a reminder of the bits and bobs of quiet I did have. Whenever I found myself waiting or traveling on the subway, I would pull out my knitting.

I would sometimes work half a row, sometimes twenty, but at the end of the week, I had made progress—although admittedly more some weeks than others. Suddenly what seemed like useless bits of free time became time spent relaxed instead of stressed. Instead of idly daydreaming or worrying about my next destination, I emptied my mind of all of it and enjoyed a few hard-earned minutes of reprieve. The added benefit of helping ease my nerves before an interview?

About the Author Betsy Greer is the founder of Craftivism. Some parts were inspiring while others didn't really hold my attention. Included are bios of individuals and specific things that they do to knit for good, some basic patterns for frequently donated items, and action items to help the reader get started with ways they can get involved. Betsy Greer provides many examples of how knitting can bring spiritual fulfillment by focusing on things outside yourself.

The book has a nice variety of ideas of ways to help out, projects to work on, and stories of individuals and how they have used knitting to effect change in themselves, their local communities or the world. The focus is on younger people, especially members of certain movements, and many of the ideas may not be relevant to older readers who make up a huge percentage of the people with time and energy to devote to use their craft skills to help others.

However, the kind spirit of all the people profiled shines out, and the many ideas for ways to combine altruism and craftwork will inspire nearly any reader. I've loved the idea of "craftivism" since I first heard it, through Betsy Greer, as a matter of fact. Maybe it's because this isn't a new concept for me, but I found this book to be sort of dry, even though there were personal stories sprinkled throughout the text. It just didn't work for me. Maybe I am not enough of a hardcore knitter. There are also a few patterns in "Knitting for Good!

This is the first time I have received a review copy with the intent that I would review it, rather than receiving an advance copy as an author thank-you. This is the second time I have read a knitting book through, rather than just skimming to the patterns. All in all, this seems like a good book for a knitter who needs ideas on how to be an active member of a community.

    • Perhaps my favorite part is the way Greer pulls little stories from fellow knitters, showing that she is not the only one who is using her knitting to give back. It shows a sense of the very community she is proposing we use our crafting to create. JackieMJ on LibraryThing More than 1 year ago This book is extremely difficult to read, due to the fact that it is an uncorrected proof. When I first received it from Early Reviewers, I was very pleased.

However, I am now very disappointed. Although the author has a rather different view on knitting, I do not care to mix my knitting with politics.
